Windrow composting is an outdoor composting technique.
Concretely:
- Long rows of organic waste (called windrows) are formed, often 1.5 to 3 meters high and several meters wide.
- These windrows are turned regularly (with a specific machine called a windrow turner or with agricultural machinery) to ensure aeration and homogenize the decomposition.
- The process is based on aerobic fermentation (with oxygen) which gradually transforms the waste into compost.
